  • Quartz, silicon dioxide, is the most abundant mineral on the surface of the earth. It is found in all three major classifications of rock (sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous) and forms at all temperatures. It is quite hard (7.0 on the Moh's hardness scale), very durable and naturally forms in a wide variety of colours from red to pink, purple, yellow, grey, white and clear. Quite a number of these colours have their own specific names that are widely familiar; amethyst is purple quartz, citrine is yellow, smokey quartz is a transparent brown and rose quartz is pink.

A characteristic of quartz that makes it highly useful in both the worlds of technology and holistic healing is the ability of quartz crystals to vibrate at a very specific frequency. From time pieces to instruments that transmit radio and television signals to singing bowls, the vibration of quartz crystals holds amazing potential.

This introduction to quartz is focused on the clear, translucent variety sometimes simply referred to as crystal (amethyst and rose quartz have their own pages).  Often called the "master healer," clear quartz is most frequently associated with Sahasrara, the crown chakra, the prismatic effect of the stone also makes it useful for aligning all of the chakras, bringing them into harmony.

Much like the appearance of the stone itself, quartz may be used to bring clarity to internal perceptions, bringing light to shadowed and negative thought patterns.

It's fascinating ability to vibrate at specific frequencies is thought to help raise ones own positive energies to vibrate at higher frequencies as well. It is also believed to act as an amplifier for other crystals.
