  • Carnelian is a form of the mineral chalcedony and gets its colour from the presence of iron oxides that react with heat during mineral formation. Naturally occurring in red, orange or amber-tones, carnelian may show as a solid colour or as a banded design and may move from opaque to translucent with a glassy sheen.

Deeper red tones of carnelian are often associated with Muladhara, the root chakra while the orange and orange/amber varieties are associated with Svadisthana, the sacral chakra. In meditation it may be used to wake agni, the inner fire and to help filter out clouds of unhelpful thoughts. As a protective, stabilizing stone, carnelian may be used  to provide an anchor to the present moment, rooting one to the here and now.

Carnelian is a high energy stone, thought to be full of life force. As such it may help boost vitality, improving both mental motivation and physical stamina, helping one find the courage and energy to move forward.
